Research Tools

How to Research Schools

Finding the right school takes more than a rating. Here's how to dig deeper and make an informed decision.

School Rating Websites

Start with Niche.com, GreatSchools.org, and U.S. News & World Report for overall ratings, test scores, and parent reviews. The Virginia Department of Education's School Quality Profiles (schoolquality.virginia.gov) provides official state data on accreditation, SOL pass rates, and chronic absenteeism.

Visit the School

Nothing replaces seeing a school in person. Schedule a tour, attend an open house, or ask about shadow days for your child. Walk the halls, meet the principal, and get a feel for the culture. Most schools welcome prospective family visits.

Talk to Local Parents

Neighborhood Facebook groups, Nextdoor, and local parent forums are gold mines for honest feedback. Ask about teacher quality, parent involvement, extracurriculars, and how the school handles issues. Real parents give real answers.

Compare Test Scores & Growth

SOL pass rates show proficiency but don't tell the whole story. Look at student growth percentiles to see how much progress students make year-over-year. A school that grows students well may be a better fit than one with high scores but low growth.

Check Accreditation & Report Cards

Every Virginia public school receives an accreditation rating from the state. Check the Virginia School Quality Profiles for full accreditation, discipline data, teacher qualifications, and school climate information.

Know the Zone

Your street address determines your assigned public school. I can look up exact school zone boundaries for any property in Hampton Roads. This is one of the most important things I do for buyers with school-age children.

Quick Tips for School Research

Don't rely on a single rating. Cross-reference data from Niche, GreatSchools, U.S. News, and the VA DOE for the full picture.
Look beyond test scores. Extracurriculars, arts, athletics, and school culture matter just as much as academic metrics.
Consider the trajectory. A school that's improving year over year may be a better bet than one that's coasting or declining.
Let your child's needs guide you. A gifted program is meaningless if your child needs extra support or thrives in the arts.
